The internet. In modern times, it has become a staple to many. Few can stand a day without going online to check their Yahoo! mail, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. Not only does it serve as a method of communication, but it is also a source of entertainment. YouTube and 9gag are but a couple of sites that internet users check regularly for that reason. But things weren't always like this.
Remember the times when we would call our friends over the phone just to chat with them? Remember when kids ran outside to play? What ever happened to those times? Now, a conversation is just a click away, and kids stay indoors to play mindless games online. Am I the only one misses the good old days when a friend would come over just to play ball with you? Those kinds of moments seem pretty rare nowadays.
When computers and the internet were new concepts, everyone gathered around and was amazed by the simple acts of getting emails or watching something online. Life was simple, like the games of solitaire and minesweeper. But as the years went by, the technology grew and developed. Social networking sites expanded, videos became clearer, and games evolved. From the simple email, we moved on to Facebook, where we could post whatever we want to share with our friends. From card games and pinball, we now have Minecraft, Skyrim, and other games with much better graphics (alright, Minecraft doesn't count).
What once amazed us now makes us cringe. The simple things in life became obsolete. As the technology advanced, our standards rose. Dial-up became trash; using emails became old-school. And what many complain about nowadays is the speed of their internet. No one is satisfied with 1-2 kbps (which is my receive rate at times). Everyone wants faster internet.
And if it isn't the internet they are worried about, it's the machine in general. People need to buy the expensive brands for better video cards and processors. It's all about the quality and speed.
Well remember those times that I described earlier? Those were the times we didn't need all this. We didn't worry about the brand of our computers and the speed of our broadband. We didn't need all these fancy gadgets to survive. What ever happened to those times, when we didn't rely on technology as much? Is it just me, or are we getting too attached to these luxuries?
I'm not trying to be a hypocrite. I myself use the internet almost everyday. I use gadgets to play games all the time. I'm just questioning myself. Do we really need all this? Why don't you question yourself as well? When was the last time you went outside just to play around? When did you not worry about if you had enough money to play at the computer shop? When did you not complain about the slow internet connection? When did you say no to your parents' offer to buy you a new laptop?
When were you satisfied with what you already have, and didn't ask for more?
